December 2018: UNFCCC side event on "From science to policy: achieving the SDGs in a 1.5 degree warmer world". At this side event the German Committee Future Earth, the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation shared knowledge about how to communicate, mitigate and reduce the risks of climate change to ecosystems and human well-being. The event highlighted cooperative actions necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement & 2030 Agenda, and included speakers from IPCC, GSDR, Green Climate Fund and the UN 2019 Climate Summit. MORE INFORMATION

January 2019: Future Earth is preparing three new cross-cutting initiatives:  the Earth commission, the SRI conference and a new annual report series. The Earth Commission will be launched by Future Earth and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to compile the science of the whole Earth system to inform the setting of targets for safeguarding a stable and resilient planet – similar to the 1.5 degree target for climate. The SRI conference will bring together a global community of transdisciplinary research and innovation to work alongside the world’s leading sustainability scientists, and to engage policy leaders working to support the major international policy processes supporting this transition. Check out the Future Earth website for further information, also on new regional activities in e.g. the Philippines, or activities by KANs and Global Research Projects.

March 2019: Roundtable discussion on "Climate shipping pollution: piecemeal regulation for different objectives? Health, climate, environmental, and socioeconomic implications and challenges for green shipping propulsion" by German Committee Future Earth working group. Given the significant contribution of shipping emissions to local air pollution problems and to (global) climate change, the aim of the working group is to establish a transdisciplinary network of scientists and stakeholders from Northern Germany to a) develop a discussion forum for the identification of research gaps and b) to support co-designed, policy relevant research strategies to approach the problem. Among others, the following questions are to be discussed: “What science is needed to evaluate and assess policies and facilitate and legitimize transformation?  and “How can governance and decision-making be aligned across different levels, issues, and places to manage global environmental change and promote sustainable development?” MORE INFORMATION
