Developing a German perspective of Future Earth research

2. German Future Earth Summit - World Cafe

Topics in the context of global sustainability

Since its first mandate period (2013-2015), the DKN has organized a unique and highly recognized process of topic identification in Future Earth and WCRP. This path, which had found its most visible expression in the first German Future Earth Summit (2014), was followed and developed even more intensively in the second mandate period (2016-2018).  This national process of topic identification depended on the scientific community’s ideas and proposals, which were developed and operationalized in cooperation with different stakeholders, including research funders. Especially the first two summits encouraged the development of a perspective of possible central questions for sustainability research in Germany. In the process, current developments in Future Earth, such as the foundation and development of the KANs (Knowledge-Action Networks) were also taken into account. The topical directions connected to these developments were driven forward by the DKN: In addition to the second (2016) and third German Future Earth Summit (2018), DKN working groups (2015) and co-design project groups (2017) were established. It is the goal of this process, to create and continuously develop perspectives for research within the scope of Future Earth and WCRP in Germany.
