Belmont Forum, Future Earth, and the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans), have announced a call for proposals which aim to bring together researchers and experts across the globe to innovate solutions that accelerate sustainable use of oceans and minimize the effects from global change.
Thematic areas for the funding oppurtinity were developed through a global scoping process lead by Future Earth followed by additional consultations co-led by Future Earth and the Belmont Forum.
This Collaborative Research Action Call aims to contribute to the overall challenge of ocean sustainability. THE UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) acts as the overall framework. The complex challenge will be tackled by bringing together natural and social sciences, as well as policymakers, resource managers, industries and other societal partners for an integrated, interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral aprroach.

A total of 14 funders from 12 countries have committed in total over 18 million dollars of cash and in-kind resources for this call: Brazil, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Japan, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, and USA. Through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), researchers from Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros and Madagascar are also eligible for this call.
