    The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is recruiting a Director to manage the IAI’s science program and activities. This Directorship is an executive position that reports directly to IAI’s Executive Director, with responsibility for implementation of the IAI scientific agenda focused on global change.

    The Director, Science is expected to identify key scientific strategic issues, opportunities and risks and assist the Executive Director in generating and communicating broad and compelling institutional scientific strategies and direction. He/She should also be able to communicate clearly links between the IAI’s Strategic Plan and Scientific Agenda and national priorities as articulated in a regional context.

    A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in program management in the sciences, scientific research and analysis, policy formulation, application of research principles in research programs, global change issues at the level of theory and practice, and a track record of publication in the domain of global change and related areas are required.

    Research Coordinator – Earth Observations

    The European Space Agency (ESA) and Future Earth are recruiting a Research Coordinator to be a liaison between the ESA Climate Office (part of the Science, Applications and Climate Department at ESA ECSAT) and the Future Earth Global Secretariat.

    Specific Tasks: The Research Coordinator shall address the challenges listed in the ESA Earth Observation strategy and the Future Earth 2025 Vision. This is broken down into tasks supporting Future Earth, tasks supporting ESA and tasks supporting the wider Earth Observations (EO) community.

    Location: ESA Climate Office, ECSAT, Harwell Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire, UK with regular visits to the Swedish Hub of Future Earth Secretariat in Stockholm. Some international travel will be required.

    Requirements: Essential skills:

    • A PhD, preferably in Earth Sciences, or 3-5 years relevant experience working in the academic sector.
    • A deep understanding of Earth Observations and global environmental change research.
    • Good knowledge of the European Space Agency and experience in environmental remote sensing applications development and/or research.
    • Good knowledge of Future Earth, as well as the key international science coordination networks and groups.

    The Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg is inviting applications for a experienced scientist (E13, 100%) and a PhD (E13, 65%) with interests in VOCs, plant ecophysiological processes and plant-atmosphere exchange, to study the ecophysiological mechanisms controlling VOC emissions and carbon metabolism in plants. Within the ERC-consolidator-project VOCO2, we use state-of-the-art PTR-TOF techniques coupled to stable isotope laser spectroscopy and 13C label techniques to trace VOC emissions and carbon allocation from the metabolic to the plant and ecosystem scale. In autumn 2019, a large scale experiment will be conducted in the Biosphere II in Arizona, US. The position will be 2 year + 1 year upon extension of the project and starts at 01.10.2018

    Post-doc candidates should be experienced in PTR-TOF or related techniques both regarding instrument operation and data treatment, preferentially with a sound background in biochemistry/secondary plant metabolism or atmospheric VOC. Excellent communicational skills (in English), conference presentations and publication skills are requested. The Post-doc will be responsible for running and maintaining the PTR-TOF. Tasks will comprise the installation and conduction of experiments together with the PhD and other team members, data evaluation, preparation of publications and participation in international conferences and scientific meetings.

Co-creation—the practice of bringing together diverse actors in a joint innovation activity to mutual benefit—has emerged as a widely desired key resource in current attempts to enhance innovation. It answers to recent calls for greater responsiveness and responsibility in innovation practice, and broader trends to organize innovation more openly, democratically, and with a view towards concrete local needs and contexts.

One position will be held at the School of Agricultural Policy and Development of the University of Reading (United Kingdom) for a period of 42 months within the ERC Consolidator Grant funded project “Indigenous Communities, Land Use and tropical Deforestation” (INCLUDE).

    Tropical deforestation is an important contributor to climate change, through the release of significant amounts of carbon in the atmosphere. The main proximate cause of deforestation is agricultural expansion, followed by resource extraction. This project looks at the problem of deforestation in the Argentinean dry Chaco in the province of Salta (the Chaco Salteño). The Chaco Salteño, part of the Great American Chaco (the second largest tropical forest in the American continent after the Amazon), experiences one of the fastest deforestation rates in the world (on average about 2 football fields per minute over 1970‐2015), represents an important agricultural frontier (with over 6 million ha of forest left) and hosts significant ethnic and cultural diversity, including both ‘criollos’ (small scale livestock farmers of European descent) and indigenous peoples (IPs). In the first year of the project, which started in November 2016, the involved researchers have been collecting information to understand the institutional context, with particular attention to the legal framework (both at federal and provincial level) regarding land use, deforestation, agriculture and IPs communal land rights. The post‐doctoral researchers are expected to bring the work forward, by working on three macro‐objectives (MOs).

    The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is recruiting for the position of Associate Director to be based in Lebanon. The ACSS is a regional, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening social science research and knowledge production in the Arab world. By supporting researchers and academic/research institutions, the ACSS aims to contribute to the creation, dissemination, validation and utilization of social science research and to enrich public debate about the challenges facing Arab societies. ACSS is a member of the ISSC.

    The Associate Director is responsible for working with the Director General (DG) on planning, developing, and implementing the ACSS strategic plan, including fundraising, supervising all grants and fellowships programmes, and communicating and coordinating with all stakeholders in relation to these programmes.

    Main responsibilities:

    • Assisting the DG in developing and implementing strategy plans.
    • Assisting the DG with fundraising.
    • Leading the grants and fellowships programs work of the ACSS (It is essential that the person has grant-making and management experience).
    • Taking major responsibility for the annual report to donors, as well as reporting on grants related to specific areas of responsibility.
    • Working with various units within the office to develop annual work plans, as well as short-term and long-term strategies in line with the overall strategy.
    • Working with the Board of Trustees and sub-committees as needed.
    • Working with the Administration & Finance Manager on internal policies and financial reporting as needed.
    • Supervising current focal points (in Palestine and Algeria) and helping in the development of new focal points/regional offices.
    • Contributing to the publications of the ACSS.
    • Other office-wide responsibilities to be mutually agreed upon periodically.

    Am Institut für Volkswirtschaftslehre der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) zu Kiel ist zum Sommersemester 2019 eine W3-Professur für Volkswirtschaftslehre wieder zu besetzen. Die/der zukünftige Stelleninhaber/in soll das Fachgebiet Volkswirtschaftslehre in Forschung und Lehre vertreten.     The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), as soon as possible, as part of the BMBF-project ViWa (VirtualWaterValues). Aim of ViWa is to provide information from the local to the global scale in order to develop praxis-relevant solutions for the efficient and sustainable use of the global water resources. Within ViWa a multi-disciplinary monitoring and modelling framework will be developed and applied. GERICS contributes to ViWa by providing high-resolution global-scale climate information using a multi-domain downscaling approach as well as by sophisticated analyses of natural climate variability effecting global water resources.

    The position is a part time job (75%) and limited to the 30th of April 2020, which is the scheduled end of the ViWa-project.

    Applicants should have a university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science and extensive experience in the field of regional or global modelling of the climate or Earth system.

RCAP develops strategic plans and approves work plans for the Office.  Members of the Regional Committee are nominated by ICSU National Members in the Asia and Pacific region.

    The Director is responsible for the activities of the Regional Office under the direction of the ICSU Executive Director (based in Paris).  The staff of the Office will consist of a total of three persons. The Director is appointed by ASM in collaboration with and approval by the ICSU Executive Board for a period of three (3) years from the date of appointment. The said appointment may, thereafter, be extended for a period as may be determined by the ICSU Executive Board and ASM.

    The International Max Planck Research School for Evolutionary Biology is offering up to 10 PhD positions and fellowships.

    The graduate school is dedicated to highest level of research and training in all areas of contemporary Evolutionary Biology. It is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, the University of Kiel and the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR).

    Global Sustainability Postdoctoral Researcher

    Future Earth is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead a targeted global sustainability synthesis. This position for a Future Earth Fellow is a one-year sabbatical and will be based at Future Earth’s Global Hub in Sweden located at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. The focus of the fellowship will be:

    • Synthesis and integration of scenarios and pathways to a sustainable world by 2050
    • Manage integration between three related initiatives: The World in 2050 (TWI2050), Analysis, Integration and Modelling of the Earth System (AIMES) and Future Earth’s Sustainable Development Goals Knowledge-Action Network.

    The successful applicant will manage a major synthesis effort, which may require some modelling, to provide policy-relevant new insights related to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within planetary boundaries by 2050. The three areas of interest are:

    • Planetary health: Feeding 9.7 billion people a healthy diet within planetary boundaries
    • Rapid transformation from urban sprawl to sustainable cities
    • Alternative pathways to zero emissions by 2050.

    Early career researchers with deep knowledge of one of these areas who are seeking to expand their knowledge in other areas are encouraged to apply.     Die zentrale Fragestellung des Projekts „Wasserressourcen als bedeutsame Faktoren der Energiewende auf lokaler und globaler Ebene (WANDEL)“ umfasst die Analyse des Einflusses von Einschränkungen der Wasserverfügbarkeit auf die Nutzung von konventionellen bzw. erneuerbaren Energien und ob damit die weltweite Energiewende beschleunigt oder negativ beeinflusst wird. Die Analysen erfolgen in Fallstudien in Deutschland, Marokko und Brasilien und auf der Ebene der globalen Zusammenhänge.

    Das Projekt „Erhöhung der Steuerungskompetenz zur Erreichung der Ziele eines integrierten Wassermanagements (STEER)“ hat zum Ziel, gemeinsam mit Akteuren vor Ort Ansatzpunkte zur Erhöhung der Steuerungskompetenz (good governance) in Bezug zu komplexen Wasserressourcenproblemen und systemischen Herausforderungen zu identifizieren und in Einzelfällen geeignete Maßnahmen bereits umzusetzen. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf einer Verbesserung von Koordination und Kooperation. Des Weiteren soll eine diagnostische Toolbox entwickelt werden, welche sich für die Anwendung in verschiedenen institutionellen und naturräumlichen Kontexten eignet. Dazu werden Fallstudien in Deutschland, Spanien, Südafrika und in der Mongolei durchgeführt.

    The Future Earth Secretariat is currently seeking a Science Officer for the global hub in Paris. The Secretariat for Future Earth encompasses five global hubs located in five different countries (U.S., Canada, Japan, Sweden, France). Its key functions include Coordination, Communication, Research Enabling, Capacity Building, and Synthesis & Foresight.

    The new Science Officer will work in a dynamic international setting. He or she is expected to work on science-policy interface aspects of Synthesis & Foresight, in particular between Future Earth and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Also, he or she will work on the coordination of Knowledge-Action Networks – initially on the Food-Water-Energy Nexus, later increasingly on the topic of Extremes and Disaster Risk Reduction.

    The successful candidate will work with the leadership of TWI2050, which is a partnership among scientists and experts in integrated assessment modelling, Earth system modelling and social-ecological studies on pathways to sustainable development. He/she will function as the main science coordinator for the program at SRC.
