WCRP identifies gaps in the scientific understanding of climate change and its variability. Through observations and modelling, WCRP enables policy-relevant climate predictions. “Coordinated Observation and Prediction of the Earth System (COPES)” is the strategic framework for 2005-2015 of WCRP to increase the understanding and predicting of behaviour of the Earth system.

The aim of COPES is to allow predictions on the variability and the changes of the Earth system. Research topics within the framework focus on atmospheric interdependencies of chemistry and climate, the implementation of new data streams, extreme events, models of the earth system, the adaption of earth system data, the development of models of the next generations and the variability and changes in the water cycle.

Research in the frame of WCRP addresses:

  • Observing changes in the components of the Earth system (atmosphere, oceans, land and cryosphere) and in the interfaces among these components;
  • Improving our knowledge and understanding of global and regional climate variability and change, and of the mechanisms responsible for this change;
  • Assessing and attributing significant trends in global and regional climates;
  • Developing and improving numerical models that are capable of simulating and assessing the climate system for a wide range of space and time scales;
  • Investigating the sensitivity of the climate system to natural and human-induced forcing and estimating the changes resulting from specific disturbing influences.

"To achieve its objectives, WCRP adopts a multi-disciplinary approach, organizes large-scale observational and modelling projects and provides the international forum to align efforts of thousands of climate scientists to provide the best possible climate information."

Sponsors of the WCRP are the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), International Council for Science (ICSU) und die Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UNESCO.
