DKN Future Earth Activity

Strengthening the Social Sciences within Future Earth

To allow options for action, it is of great importance to bring insights from the natural science in the societal context and relate them to insight from the social science, economic and political science. In the past, the "International Human Dimension Programme on Global Environmental Change" has taken first steps towards finding ways of increasing co-operation and developing research questions in this field. In Germany, the integration of natural and social science knowledge has been further developed in international collaborative projects such as GLOWA (Global Change and the hydrological cycle) or Megacities-Megachallenge (Informal Dynamics of Global Change) and has been advanced through different research methods and concepts. The proportion of social sciences in the international program research in the field of global change has increased in recent years; however, the proportion is still low compared to the natural sciences.

The members of this DKN activity therefore deal, among other things, with the question of possible obstacles to the better integration of the social sciences in global change and global sustainability topic areas. The aim of this DKN activity is to discuss backgrounds, to discuss long-term goals and to stimulate and initiate possible activities that strengthen social sciences. The activity thus helps to promote the cooperation between natural and social sciences in the field of global sustainability research in the long term and to advance the research agenda accordingly.
