DKN Future Earth Activity

Integrated Research: Concepts, Instruments, Processes

Future Earth is a new 10-year international research initiative that will deliver societal relevant knowledge to respond effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and to identify possible transformation pathways towards global sustainability.

Main research priorities within Future Earth shall be co-designed and co-produced by science, politics, economy and society. This calls for a close collaboration between scientists and non-scientists, as well as the integration of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and engineering. Doing this Future Earth poses new challenges for involved parties and disciplines.

The expert discussion is based on the Future Earth Transition Teams’ final report that introduces the structure and design of Future Earth. The main goal of the expert discussion was to examine the proposed research design of the international research program “Future Earth: research for global sustainability” concerning chances and contents, to discuss chances for the German research landscape, and to further develop the suggested integrated approach.
