Unser Mandat

Our Mandate

In March 2013, the Executive Committee of DFG appointed the members of the scientific advisory board „”German Committee Future Earth“ (DKN Future Earth) the first time. The “German Committee Future Earth” succeeds the “German National Committee for Global Change Research (NKGCF)” that made it possible for Germany to take on a leading role in the field of integrated research.

The German Committee Future Earth acts as the national representative for international relationships, developments and activities within the international research programs Future Earth and WCRP. On a national level, the DKN Future Earth provides support for interdisciplinary and integrated research and for the identification of relevant research topics within a national as well as international context. In this regard, the DKN Future Earth encourages the collaboration between natural and social sciences, the humanities and engineering to advance research activities that help shape the pathways for a global sustainable society, to find a systematic approach for problems and to generate societal relevant knowledge. The dialogue between stakeholders from politics, economy and society, as well as the integration of their knowledge is a crucial part of Future Earth research activities. The DKN Future Earth supports the German community in these processes and encourages their further development.

The mandate includes:

 1. Development of scientific agenda to

  • identify, prepare and support strategically important topics in sustainability research being relevant in a scientific and societal perspective, and introduce these topics into the international processes of Future Earth and WCRP.
  • initiate and support the development of new and innovative research approaches in the context of Future Earth and WCRP.
  • advise national research funders on questions regarding Future Earth, Belmont Forum and WCRP.

2. National forum for researchers involved in sustainability research to

  • encourage communication and involvement of the German scientific community with the overall goal to support international collaboration between social sciences, natural sciences, the humanities and engineers to identify societal relevant research themes and to further develop sustainability research.
  • encourage participation of German researchers in Future Earth and WCRP related strategic boards, committees, or projects.
  • discuss support of early career scientists and recommend supportive measures and activities for integrative working scientists in sustainability research.
  • deliberate on scientific capacity building in Future Earth and WCRP research within a North-South dialogue.
