Dr. Bettina Schmalzbauer, Executive Director at German Committee Future Earth, is engaged since 2007 in the strategic development of research and related issues in the context of global change and international challenges. She got involved in setup the European alliance of national committees and served as member of the advisory board for citizen science. She holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences with years of experience from a creative area.

Head of Secretariat of German National Committee on Global Change Research (research advisory body to the German Research Foundation and Federal Ministry of Education and Research; linked to the international programs IGBP, IHDP, DIVERSITAS, WCRP, ESSP). Secretariat located from 2009-2013 at Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Department Environment and natural Ressources; from 2007-2009 at Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, Department of Geography.

Ph.D. (Dr. sc.agr.) in Agricultural Sciences, University of Hohenheim, Germany. Thesis: Carbon Turnover in Fen Areas of the Donauried: The Role of the Pore Space and Different Anthropogenic Use.
