CONCEPTUALIZING THE NEW COMMONS: THE EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE COMMONS & SEED AND VARIETY COMMONS

19 March 2018: Abstract Submission Deadline!

30 March 2018: Registration Deadline!

New Commons – including Digital Commons, Knowledge Commons, Cultural Commons, Global Commons and others – have become an increasingly important research subject in Commons studies.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance conceptual and empirical insights into the creation and management of Knowledge Commons and Seed & Variety Commons as two fields of application of the New Commons. A fruitful exchange and synthesis of perspectives shall help to generate practical knowledge, interdisciplinary as well as disciplinary conceptual sharpness, and to promote the research agenda on the New Commons.

The workshop aims at adding to the understanding of Knowledge Commons and Seed & Variety Commons by especially addressing the following questions:

  • How can the Knowledge Commons and Seed & Variety Commons, respectively, be conceptualized and analyzed? How do they differ regarding their normative and theoretical embedding in the Commons discourse?
  • What are the core organizational challenges in the fields of Knowledge Commons and Seed & Variety Commons (such as regarding financing, protection from privatization, knowledge integration)?
  • What political strategies, institutional arrangements and organizational structures are suitable for overcoming these organizational challenges? How can the application field of Seed & Variety Commons learn from Knowledge Commons, and vice versa?

To ensure a high quality exchange of ideas and a workshop working atmosphere no more than 25 participants will be selected (including the three keynote speakers; excluding the organizing team).
