First international cross-cutting Future Earth Knowledge Action Network workshop

The newly launched Future Earth Knowledge Action Networks (KANs) are 11 promising networks for solution driven research in the fields of e.g. health, natural assets, ocean, sustainable consumption & production, transformations, urbanisation, the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, finance & economics, decarbonisation, and emergent risks and extreme events. With the aim to The Knowledge Action Networks aim to facilitate the production and dissemination of highly integrative sustainability research co-created with stakeholders by connecting relevant communities, supporting the co-design, distillation, translation, and transferring the knowledge needed to meet global sustainability challenges.

Over the past 2 years KANs have been developing in different ways. This first cross-cutting workshop today was convened to bring together KAN scientists (leaders of development teams or their representatives) and members from the Future Earth management team, representatives from the KAN Task Team and the Future Earth Governing Council to share experiences in the development of KANs and to explore cross-cutting issues and collaborations within, between and beyond KANs.

Supported by DFG and the German Committee Future Earth the workshop was organised back to back with the 3rd German Future Earth Summit “From Knowledge to Action” (8./9.2.2018).

SDGs and the Future Earth Research Agenda - perspectives of Early Career Scientists

    Application Deadline 15 February 2017

At our meeting at the FE Summit in Berlin 2016, the need to further discuss the implications of the Agenda 2030 for inter- and transdisciplinary global change research beyond the omnipresent references to the SDGs was identified. In order to do so, we successfully applied for funds at the DFG.

We are happy to invite interests to a meeting on “SDGs and the Future Earth Research Agenda - perspectives of Early Career Scientists” which will take place from 20 -21 April 2017 in Kiel.

Two major points of discussion will be :

    • Possibilities and limitations of SDG-based research for being policy-relevant
    • Identifying possible ways to systematically deal with SDG-inherent conflicts of interest

    Speakers are:

    • Dr. Bettina Schmalzbauer (German Committee in Future Earth)
    • Prof. Asunción Lera St. Clair (DNV GL, Member of the Future Earth Engagement Committee)
    • Dr. Christiane Joerk (DFG)
    • Dr. Florian Zabel (LMU München)

We are looking forward to welcoming many participants in Kiel. Please send your applications including a short letter of motivation until February 15th to Ruth Delzeit (ruth.delzeit@ifw-kiel.de). Since we have some funding to refund travel costs, please indicate your potential travel fund requirements in your email.

Round table discussion Alliance working group "Infrastructures in Terrestrial Research"

The working group of the Alliance of German Science Organisations was set up in response to the strategy paper "Long-Term Outlook and Infrastructure of Terrestrial Research in Germany", drawn up by three DFG Senate Commissions and the German Committee Future Earth in early 2013. In September 2013, following a suggestion by the DFG, the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany decided to set up the working group for a period of five years. The group will also handle ongoing Alliance activities relating to biodiversity research.

The working group brings together experts from various member organisations of the Alliance. The aim is to create a networking concept that generates models for strengthening long-term research covering all compartments and scales. The focus is on three main tasks: stronger international networking of national locations and activities, a comprehensive concept for data management and the identification of relevant themes to further develop the research field.
